Surgical Treatment for Plantar Warts

Plantar warts are growths that occur on the soles of the feet. They are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) and often cause pain when walking or standing. While many over-the-counter treatments are available, some warts may require surgical treatment. This procedure is known as curettage and is often reserved for recalcitrant warts.

Curettage involves numbing the area with a local anesthetic and using a sharp instrument to scrape the wart off the skin. This procedure is in our Docklands Clinic. The site may be sore for a few days after the procedure, but over-the-counter pain medications can help alleviate discomfort.

Plantar warts can be stubborn and difficult to treat. However, surgical curettage is an effective treatment option for those without success with other methods. If you have plantar warts that are causing pain or preventing you from enjoying your daily activities, talk to our podiatrist about whether this procedure is correct for you.

Surgical curettage is a safe and effective treatment option for plantar warts that have not responded to other treatments. The procedure is usually performed in a doctor’s office or surgery centre and only takes a few minutes. There may be some soreness after the procedure, but this can be alleviated with over-the-counter pain medications. If you are experiencing pain or discomfort from plantar warts, talk to our Podiatrist to see if surgical curettage is right for you.
