What causes Achilles tendinoapthy?

Achilles tendinopathy is characterized by pain and degeneration of the Achilles tendon, which is the large tendon that runs down the back of the leg and connects the calf muscles to the heel bone. Several biomechanical factors can contribute to the development of Achilles tendinopathy, including:

  • Overuse: Repeated stress on the Achilles tendon from running, jumping, and dancing can lead to tendinopathy.
  • Inflexibility: Tight calf muscles and a lack of ankle joint flexibility can strain the Achilles tendon, increasing the risk of tendinopathy.
  • Foot posture: Flat feet or high arches can alter the alignment of the foot and leg, causing the Achilles tendon to be subjected to abnormal stresses that can lead to tendinopathy.
  • Poor footwear: Wearing shoes with poor support or cushioning can increase the risk of developing tendinopathy.
  • Age: The risk of developing Achilles tendinopathy increases as the tendon becomes less flexible and more susceptible to injury.

It is essential to address these biomechanical factors to help prevent and treat Achilles tendinopathy. This may include stretching and strengthening exercises to improve flexibility and muscle strength, using proper footwear, and avoiding activities that cause excessive strain on the tendon.
